Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Cat Dealer Service Tool Catalog" or refer to Special Publication, PECJ0003, "Cat Shop Supplies and Tools Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Inspect
During normal routine maintenance, close observation of the lube oil filters will generally indicate the condition of roller bearing and journal bearings.The inspection covers should be removed every 500 hours and the condition of the bearings should be inspected.When a connecting rod bearing is severely worn or damaged, the mating rod journal on the crankshaft will often also be damaged. The crankshaft may require removal and repair. Remove the crankshaft with the rod bearings and rod bearing housing attached. Refer to the Disassembly and Assembly Manual, "Crosshead - Remove and Install" for information and procedures.Replace
Duty cycles and types of service can vary. Assessing wear and tear on a pump based only on hours operated can be difficult. Rod bearings and roller bearings may require replacing after approximately 3000 hours. Signs of extensive wear will generally show up as spalling of material, causing pitting or scoring on the working surfaces. Any spalling on bearing surfaces is an indication to replace that item immediately. Refer to the Disassembly and Assembly Manual, "Crosshead - Remove and Install" for information and procedures.
