Remove the planetary carrier assembly. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly Manual, "Planet Carrier Assembly - Disassemble".Note: The brake cylinder assembly is part of the cartridge assembly. The serviceman can remove the individual components of the cartridge assembly from the winch. The serviceman can also remove the cartridge assembly in order to service the brake cylinder assembly.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Personal injury can result from being struck by parts propelled by a released spring force.Make sure to wear all necessary protective equipment.Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to release the spring force.

Install Tooling (A) in order to compress the brake springs so that retaining ring (10) can be removed. Tooling (A) must be installed off-center and Tooling (A) must be installed away from the gap in retaining ring (10). This orientation allows space for Tooling (B) to access the retaining ring.
Carefully remove retaining ring (10). Slowly release Tooling (A) in order to relieve the pressure on the brake springs. After all pressure is relieved, remove Tooling (A) .

Remove brake retainer (9), seal (7), O-ring seal (8), friction discs (6), brake discs (5), and brake piston (4) from the housing. These components can be removed as a unit.

Remove brake piston (4), and remove friction discs (6) and brake discs (5) from brake retainer (9) .

Remove seal (7) and O-ring seal (8) from brake retainer (9) .
Remove springs (2) and spring spacer (3). Remove the spring backup plate (1) .
