You must read and understand the warnings and instructions contained in the Safety section of this manual before performing any operation or maintenance procedures.Front Idler Hubs
Change Oil
Perform this procedure on both left and right side idler hubs, after recent machine use. 1. Park the machine so that the drain is located at the bottom of the hub.2. Remove magnetic drain plug. Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.Inspect the magnetic plug for signs of excessive wear. Some filings are usually present. Any large pieces or excessive filings indicate imminent bearing failure. If large pieces are found, the hub should be disassembled and inspected. Consult any Caterpillar dealer for more information.3. Clean the drain plug.4. Install the drain plug. 5. Remove the side fill plug.6. Fill each hub with oil so that the oil can just be seen in the glass. See the topics Lubricant Specifications, and Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities for the recommended oil and oil quantity for the front idler hubs.7. Check the oil level after 10 minutes. Add oil if necessary. Repeat until oil level is maintained.Rollover Protective Structure (ROPS)
Retighten Bolts
Bolts are located on each side of the front of the cab, under the floor mat. Bolts are located under the floor mat at the left rear of the cab, and inside the right side console on the right rear of the operator' compartment.Look for any loose or damaged bolts. Replace damaged bolts or missing bolts with original equipment parts only. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 400 70 N m (300 50 lb ft).Do not straighten or repair the ROPS by welding reinforcement plates to the ROPS.Contact your Caterpillar dealer for repair of cracks in welds, castings or any metal section on the ROPS.Transmission System
Change Oil/Wash Suction Screen
Front View.1. Thoroughly clean the drain plug before removing. Remove the transmission oil drain plug and allow oil to drain into a suitable container.2. Clean and install the drain plug. The oil screen must be removed and cleaned if the transmission is drained or disassembled for any reason.
Front View.The transmission screen is located at the lower front of the transmission.3. Remove bolts (1) and cover (2). 4. Remove screen (3). Remove the magnets from the screen.5. Wash the screen and the magnets in clean, nonflammable solvent.6. Install the magnets into the screen and install the screen and cover. 7. Remove the oil filler cap.8. Add the oil. See the topic Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities.9. Clean and install the dipstick.10. Start and run the engine for a few minutes. Check for leaks.11. Stop the engine.12. Maintain the oil level between the ADD and FULL marks on the dipstick.Wash Breather
The breather is located on the left, front corner of the transmission. 1. Remove the breather.2. Wash the breather in clean, nonflammable solvent.3. Install the breather.Air Conditioner Dessicant
Replace Receiver/Dryer
Replace the receiver/dryer in the system. Contact your Caterpillar dealer for the correct procedure and instructions. Use the pressures given in the Service Manual in
