Hot oil and components can cause personal injury.Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin.
Do not under fill or overfill engine crankcase with oil. Either condition can cause engine damage.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Park the machine on a hard, level surface. Stop the engine before you check the engine oil level. Allow the oil to cool for five minutes.
Open the engine hood. The dipstick is located on the left side of the machine.

Maintain the engine oil level between the two notches.Note: When you operate the machine on severe slopes, the oil level in the engine crankcase must be at the maximum level.
If the engine oil level is low, add engine oil.

Remove the oil filler cap.
Add the correct type of engine oil. Add engine oil until the engine oil level is between the two notches on the dipstick.Reference: For the correct type and the correct amount of oil, refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities".
Clean the oil filler cap and install the oil filler cap.
Start the engine. Run the engine at low idle for five minutes. Check for leaks. After five minutes, check the engine oil level on the dipstick. Maintain the engine oil level between the 2 notches.
