Introduction
The 242-3980, 329-2630, and 329-2631 Piston Ring Groove Gauges are precision tools used to check 3500 Engine piston ring grooves for wear.The 246-1176 Piston Ring Groove Gauge Group includes the 242-3980 Gauge (not serviced separately), 6V-3073 Storage Case , foam inserts for storage case, Tool Operating Manual, and Storage Case Decal.

Applications
The 242-3980 Piston Ring Groove Gauge is used to check the top ring groove of 3500A and B Engines with monotherm pistons.The 329-2630 Piston Ring Groove Gauge is used to check the top ring groove of monotherm pistons on 3500B Engines with serial numbers 7TR, 2GR, or 7RN.The 329-2631 Piston Ring Groove Gauge is used to check the second ring groove of monotherm pistons on 3500B Engines with serial numbers Series 7TR, 2GR, or 7RN.Note: The 242-3980, 329-2630, and 329-2631 Piston Ring Groove Gauges are a Go/NoGo design. If the gauge passes through the appropriate ring groove of the piston, beyond the widest point, the piston cannot be reused. If the gauge DOES NOT pass through the ring groove, the piston CAN be reused.Procedure
Piston ring groove gauges are precision instruments. To avoid damage to gauges, do not drop, strike with a hammer, or store where damage to the tool can occur. If gauge is dropped, discontinue use and contact the manufacturer for blade replacement and/or recalibration.
Thoroughly clean the ring grooves of the piston to be checked.Note: For more information on cleaning piston ring grooves, refer to Special Instruction, SEBF8059, "Procedure to Clean and Inspect One-Piece Pistons".
Slide the appropriate piston ring groove gauge into the designated ring groove. The gauge should be aligned with the piston pin bore, as shown.

Remove the gauge, turn the piston 90 degrees and check the same ring groove again.
If the gauge did not pass through the ring groove on either attempt, the piston can be reused.

Reuse Do Not Reuse
Wipe the piston gauge blades with a clean dry cloth.
Repeat Step 1 through Step 5 to check other applicable piston ring grooves, as required.Maintenance Section
Maintenance
When finished checking piston ring grooves, wipe down the piston ring groove gauge with a clean, dry cloth.
Store in a protective foam lined case, in a clean, dry, climate controlled location.
Inspect prior to each use for nicks, burrs, dents, cracks, bends, or worn parts. If damage is found, discontinue use until inspected and released for use by an approved inspector at the
