Information:
FLUID SPILLAGE CONTAINMENT Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "TOOLS AND SHOP PRODUCT GUIDE, NENG2500", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
The driveshafts are under drive line windup pressure. You must release drive line windup pressure in all driveshafts before preforming any work on any driveshafts. To prevent possible injury or death, release the drive line windup pressure by raising all the wheels on one side of machine and then placing the wheels back on the ground. This will allow the drive line windup pressure to release.
Hot oil and components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact the skin. Be sure that the engine and components are cool enough to touch with your bare hand prior to performing any service work.
1. Lower or remove the rear section of the crankcase guard. Drain all fluids in a suitable container for storage or disposal.2. Drain the transmission fluid to below the level of the shaft. 3. Remove bolts (1) and cover (2). 4. Remove bolts (3) and plate (4). Bearing cage has been removed for photo clarity. 5. Remove retainer ring (5).6. With Tool (A) and pry bar, pull shaft (6) out approximately 458 mm (18 in). 7. Loosen two clamps (8), and slide rubber hose (7) back on tube assembly (9).8. Remove tube assembly (9) with the O-ring seal (not shown).Install Drive Shaft (Front Section)
During the installation of the drive shaft, check the condition of all the O-ring seals used. If any of the seals are damaged, use new parts for replacement. 1. Install tube assembly (9) (do not position rubber hose (7) at this time). 2. With two people, install shaft (6). One person needs to be under the machine in order to line up the splines on shaft (6) to the transmission. 3. With shaft (6) in place, install retainer ring (5). 4. Install plate (4) and bolts (3). 4. Install cover (2) and bolts (1) 5. Slide rubber hose (7) forward on tube assembly (9) and tighten clamps (8). Refer to the Topic "Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities" in the "Operation and Maintenance Manual" for the proper filling procedure and the proper levels for the transmission.
