Information:

The engine main oil pump picks up oil from the oil pan base. The oil is drawn through the screen in bell (1). Tube (3) returns bypassed oil to the oil pan base from the pressure regulating valve (2). The prelube system picks up oil supply through tube (4).

1. Prepare the engine to remove the oil pan base.2. Attach a suitable hoist to the engine and lift it from the base. Approximate weight D399 Engine 3800 lbs. (1724 kg) D398 Engine 3000 lbs. (1361 kg) D379 Engine 2100 lbs. (953 kg).3. Block the engine securely and remove the base.4. Replace damaged gaskets with new ones.
PREPARING TO REMOVE THE OIL PAN BASE
1-Bolts. 2-Prelube system adapter. 3-Oil pressure piping from pump and pressure regulating valve. 4-Fuel transfer pump lines. 5-Prelube system oil pump external supply tube. 6-Water pump supply elbow. 7-Oil pump assembly.5. Install in the reverse order of removal. At installation apply 8H5137 Form-A-Gasket to threads of all bolts. The 21/2 in. long bolts are installed at (9) and the ground body bolt is installed at (8).

1. Remove four bolts that attach tube (1) to the front right corner of the base. Earlier V8 and V12 engine suction bell removal and replacement is made through the opening at right front of the base. Be sure no air or oil leaks exist when assembled.2. Remove screen in suction bell (3), for service and replacement. Be sure no air leaks exist when assembled. To remove pressure regulating valve (2), see covering topic.3. Assemble in the reverse order of disassembly. The gasket between the cylinder block and oil pan base is made in sections. Install all new sections if any section is damaged.
