Remove bolts (6), cover (5), and plug (7).
Install one bolt (6) into the flywheel housing through the hole for plug (7). Use Tooling (A) and a ratchet to turn the flywheel until bolt (4) can be installed through the hole and into the flywheel. Doing so will position the No. 1 cylinder at the top center. It may be necessary to rotate past the bolt hole to relieve lash in the cam phaser gear, then rotate back to the hole.

Remove the bolts and covers (8) from the front housing.
Remove the bolts and covers (9) from the front housing.

Remove from both sides.
Disconnect harness assemblies (10) and set to the side.
Remove bolts (11) and covers (12).

Remove from both sides.
Remove bolts (13) and guard on the right side (14).
Remove bolts (15) and timing wheels (16).

Remove hose (17) and set to the side.
Remove solenoids (18).

Remove bolts (21), plate (22), and hub (23).

Do not remove bolts (24) or set screw (25) from gear/cam phaser assemblies (26) . The spring is under high tension. Possible injury could occur.

Remove gear/cam phaser assemblies (26).

Remove bolts (27) and thrust washer (28).
Repeat steps for the camshaft drive gear on each side of the engine.

Install Tooling (C) on each end of the camshaft.Note: Tooling (D) can be installed on the flywheel housing to remove the camshaft from the rear. Tooling (D) can also be installed on the front housing to remove the camshaft from the front of the engine.
Install Tooling (D) on the flywheel housing.
Install Tooling (E) on the end of Tooling (C).Note: The camshafts for G3516 Engines are two pieces that are bolted together.
The following steps are for G3516 Engine.
Rotate the camshaft with Tooling (E). Pull the camshaft out of the engine until a suitable lifting device can be attached. Remove front camshaft (29) and rear camshaft (30) as a unit. The camshaft for G3516 Engines has a weight of approximately 82 kg (181 lb).

Remove bolts (31). Separate the camshafts and remove spacer (32).
Remove the dowel from the front of the camshaft, if necessary.
Repeat steps for the second camshaft.
