Information:
When using the ORS on an engine, it is the customer's responsibility to ensure that the above maintenance items are managed during the life of the engine. Failure to do so may result in shortened engine life or a catastrophic engine failure.
Engine Oil
Be sure to use an engine oil that has been approved for your engine. The use of an engine oil that is below the Caterpillar recommendations will cause the engine life to be shortened. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for information that is related to the correct engine oil for your engine.Record Keeping
Keep a daily maintenance log of all of the additions of engine oil to the engine. This is necessary in order to ensure that the ORS is operating properly. The daily maintenance log is also necessary for the correct adjustment to the amount of oil that is metered into the fuel system. Illustration 1 shows an example of the additions of oil during a 500 hour period. The daily maintenance log will also be the source of the total amount of oil that has been added since the last oil change. This information is needed at the time of each oil analysis.

Caterpillar S O S Analysis
Perform the following tests on every sample of engine oil:
Wear metals
Infrared analysis
Total Base Number (TBN)
Chemical and physical propertiesWhen an oil sample is submitted for analysis, the following information must accompany the sample:
The number of hours on the oil since the last S O S Oil Analysis
The quantity of new oil that has been added to the engine since the last S O S Oil AnalysisThe Caterpillar S O S Oil Analysis will help establish a baseline for wear metals and oxidation stability throughout the life of the engine. The S O S Oil Analysis will be used to determine if the ORS is adjusted correctly and if an oil change is required for the engine. The analysis will also be used to determine if an abnormality is occurring in the engine such as water or fuel contamination in the oil, bearing wear, etc..The following graph is an example of the increasing trend of Fe for an engine. As the hours increase on the engine oil for the engine, the amount of Fe that is found in the oil increases. Fe is a wear metal that becomes suspended in the oil during normal engine operation.

Typical Fe trend that is plotted from results of S O S Oil Analysis on an engine
Note: Check that this type of trend is occurring for your engine. If the analysis does not exhibit a trend that is similar to the above plot, check for the following conditions: proper operation of the ORS, rate for metering of the oil and proper operation of the engine. Refer to Systems Operation, "Troubleshooting" for information that is related to evaluating this condition.Replace the Engine Oil Filters
Only use Caterpillar oil
