B 3 1000 mm (39.4 inch) Steel bar Introduction
The following information describes the procedures for adjusting the front axle steering linkages.Test Preparation - Toe-in
Raise the front wheels slightly off the ground.
Install sufficient blocking under the frame and lower the machine to the blocking.Adjustment Procedure for the Toe-In
Illustration 1 g03688416
Typical example of the front drive and steering axle
(1) Tie rod nut
(2) Locknut
(3) Adjustment rod
(4) Ball joint
(5) Cylinder rod
(6) Hydraulic steering cylinder
Tighten the ball joint (4) to 300 N m (221 lb ft).
Tighten the tie rod nut (1) to 280 N m (207 lb ft).
Illustration 2 g03688430
Position the cylinder rod (5) until dimension (a) is equal on both sides of the hydraulic steering cylinder (6).
Loosen the locknut (2).
Illustration 3 g03688470
Typical example
(D) 500 mm (19.7 inch)
Put two equal 1000 mm (39.4 inch) linear bars on the wheel hubs and lock the bars with two nuts on the wheel stud.Note: The two bars should be bolted at the middle so that the bars are perpendicular to the supporting surface and parallel to the pinion shaft. Align the two bars.
Illustration 4 g03688480
Typical example
(b) Distance in front of the axle from the bar to the bar
(c) Distance behind the axle from the bar to the bar
(e) Diagonal distance from the bar to the bar
(f) Diagonal distance from the bar to the bar
Measure the distance (b) and (c) between the ends of the bars. Measure the distance (e) and (f) between the ends of the bars.
Adjust the rods (3) until distance (b) and distance (c) are equal. Adjust the angle until distance (e) and distance (f) are equal.
Repeat Step 7 until no adjustment is required.
Adjust the rods (3) until dimension (b) is less than dimension (c) by 0.0 mm to 5.0 mm (0.0 inch to 0.19 inch).
Verify that the distance (e) and distance (f) are still equal. Verify that distance (b) is less than dimension (c) by 0.0 mm to 5.0 mm (0.0 inch to 0.19 inch).
Tighten the locknuts (2) to 250 N m (185 lb ft).
Remove the blocking and lower the machine to the ground.Test Preparation - Steering Angle
Illustration 5 g03688538
Typical example
(11) Locknut
(12) Knuckle
(13) BoltAfter the wheels have been correctly aligned, the maximum steering angle must be adjusted. Each wheel is equipped with a knuckle (12). The knuckle is equipped with two bolts (13) that act as steering stops. Each bolt is secured in place with a locknut (11).
Park the machine on level ground. Move the transmission control to the NEUTRAL position. Lower the boom and retract the boom. Engage the parking brake.
Raise the front of the machine to lift the front wheels off the ground. Place the jack in a location that will sustain the weight of the machine such as the axle pads. The axle pad should be parallel to the ground. The head of the jack should be against a flat surface. Use a jack which will support the weight of the machine.
Remove both of the front wheels.
