Remove the front housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Housing (Front) - Remove".
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: Be sure to mark the orientation of each of the gears for installation purposes.

Check the condition of bearing (7) in adjustable idler gear (8). If bearing (7) is worn or damaged, use a new part for replacement. Use Tooling (A) to replace bearing (7) in adjustable idler gear (8) .

Check the condition of shaft (21). If the bearing diameter of the shaft is worn or damaged, remove bolts (22) and replace shaft (21) with a new part.
Remove bolts (24) that hold plate (23) to the cylinder block. Remove plate (23) .
