Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: The procedure to install the right hand boom cylinder and the procedure to install the left hand boom cylinder are identical. The procedure that follows is for one of the boom cylinders.Note: Make sure that the pin bores in the boom cylinder, in the boom, and in the frame are clean and free of dirt and debris prior to the installation of the boom cylinder.

Attach a suitable lifting device to boom cylinder (3) , as shown. The weight of boom cylinder (3) is approximately 168 kg (370 lb). Position the boom cylinder in the frame and on Tooling (A) , as shown. Make sure that the pin bores in the boom cylinder and the pin bores in the frame are aligned.

Apply Tooling (E) to pin assembly (7) . Temporarily install the spacer and pin assembly (7) .Note: Do not remove the lifting device from the boom cylinder at this time.

Measure the total clearance between the boom cylinder and the frame at the pin bore. The total clearance of Dimension (a) plus Dimension (b) cannot be more than 1.0 mm (0.04 inch). If the total clearance is less than 1.0 mm (0.04 inch), the addition of shims between the boom cylinder and the frame will not be required. If the total clearance is more than 1.0 mm (0.04 inch), add the correct thickness of shims in order to obtain the required clearance.

If shims need to be installed between the boom cylinder and the upper frame, remove pin assembly (7) and the spacer. Install the correct amount of shims. Install the spacer and pin assembly (7) .
Install bolt (8) . Tighten bolt (8) to a torque of 460 60 N m (340 44 lb ft).
Remove the lifting device from the boom cylinder.

Connect hose assemblies (9) .

Install shim (6) between the boom and the boom cylinder.

Attach a suitable lifting device to the rod end of the boom cylinder, as shown. Raise the rod end of the boom cylinder until the pin bore aligns with the boom pin. Drive the boom pin into the rod end of the boom cylinder.
Install spacer (5) .

Place retainer plate (4) in position. Install bolts (2) . Tighten bolts (2) to a torque of 100 20 N m (75 15 lb ft).
Remove the suitable lifting device from boom cylinder (3) .

Connect lubrication hose assembly (1) .
Lubricate the pins for the boom cylinder.
Fill the hydraulic oil tank with oil to the correct level. Refer to
