Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts. Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.Note: Check the condition of all seals and of all components. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.

Improper assembly of parts that are spring loaded can cause bodily injury.To prevent possible injury, follow the established assembly procedure and wear protective equipment.
Put retainer (13) in position on Tooling (A) .
Check all of the springs of the steering clutch for the correct spring tension. Refer to Specifications for the correct information.
Put sleeves (12) in retainer (13) .
Put inner springs (11) in position on sleeves (12) .
Install outer springs (10) over inner springs (11) .
Position drum (9) over the springs.

Note: Check the condition of the discs and disc assemblies for wear. If the parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.Note: The thickness of a new set of the steering clutch discs and the disc assemblies is 51.10 mm (2.012 inch). The minimum thickness for a worn set is 45.70 mm (1.800 inch).
Install discs (8) and disc assemblies (7) in the correct sequence.
Put plate (6) on steering clutch (3) .
Install Tooling (B) and the nut on steering clutch (3). Make sure that the holes in the plate are in alignment with the sleeves.
Put pressure on steering clutch (3) with Tooling (A) .
Install bolts (4) and locks (5). Bend back the lock toward the bolt.
Release the pressure on steering clutch (3). Remove Tooling (B) and the nut.
Attach a suitable lifting device to steering clutch (3). The weight of steering clutch (3) is approximately 90 kg (200 lb). Remove steering clutch (3) from Tooling (A) and place steering clutch (3) on suitable cribbing. Remove the suitable lifting device from steering clutch (3) .

Attach Tooling (D) and a suitable lifting device to drum (2). The weight of drum (2) is approximately 23 kg (50 lb).
Put drum (2) in position over the steering clutch.
Put brake bands (1) on drum (2) .End By: Install the steering clutches. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Clutch - Remove and Install".
