Illustration 1 g01114004
Typical example
Use tool (A) in order to remove the circlips (2) from piston (4).
Remove the piston pin (3) from the piston (4). Note: If the piston pin cannot be removed by hand, heat the piston to a temperature of 45 5 °C (113 9 °F). Do not use a oxyacetylene torch to heat the piston. Mark the piston pin for installation.
Check the condition of the following parts: circlips (2), piston pin (3) and piston (4). If these items are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement. Refer to Specifications, "Pistons and Rings" and Specifications, "Conrods" for more information.

Typical example
Illustration 3 g01114007
Typical example
Use tool (B) in order to remove the following items from piston (4): top piston ring (7), intermediate piston ring (6) and oil control piston ring (5). Note: Identify the orientation of the piston rings for installation.
Check the condition of the piston rings. If the piston rings are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement. Refer to Specifications, "Pistons and Rings" for more information.
Illustration 4 g01114027
Typical example
Remove the nuts (8) for the connecting rod cap (9). Remove the connecting rod cap (9) from the connecting rod (1). Remove the bearing shells (10) from the connecting rod (1) and the connecting rod cap (9).
Check the condition of the following parts: nuts (8), connecting rod cap (9) and bearing shells (10). If these items are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement. Refer to Specifications, "Conrods" for more information.
Illustration 5 g01114056
Typical example
Check the condition of the following items: piston pin bushing (11) and connecting rod (1). Refer to Specifications, "Conrods" for more information. If necessary, use tool (C) and a suitable press to remove the piston pin bushing (11) from the connecting rod (1). Note: Removal of the piston pin bushing must be carried out by personnel with the correct training. Special machinery is required. For more information, refer to an authorized Caterpillar dealer or a Caterpillar distributor.
