Information:

Personal injury or death can result from escaping fluid under pressure.Escaping fluid under pressure, even a very small pin-hole size leak, can penetrate body tissue and cause serious injury and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this type of injury.Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak.
Personal injury or death can result from machine articulation or movement.Machine frames can move and a person can be crushed.Connect the steering frame lock link between the front and rear frames before working on machine.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
The maximum pressure in the steering system is limited to 31000 750 kPa (4500 110 psi) by the pump control section (pressure and flow compensator valve) of the steering pump.Reference: For the correct procedure to relieve any hydraulic oil pressure that may be in the steering system, refer to the Service Manual module for Testing and Adjusting, "System Pressure - Release" for the machine that is being tested.

(1) Steering pump. (2) Pressure tap.
Attach the correct hose assembly from the 1U-5482 Pressure Adapter Group to pressure tap (2). Attach the opposite end of the hose assembly to a 0 to 40000 kPa (0 to 5800 psi) pressure gauge in the 1U-5481 Pressure Gauge Group. Pressure tap (2) is located on the discharge line of steering pump (1). The steering pump is located on the left side of the machine under the access panel behind the cab.
Start the engine. Operate the engine at high idle. The oil is at normal operating temperature when the hydraulic oil temperature gauge is between the first mark and the second mark.
After the oil has reached normal operating temperature, lower the work tool until the work tool is slightly off the ground. Run the engine at high idle. Note: During the following step, do not keep the steering pump at stall condition for more than ten seconds. If necessary, release the STIC steering control lever and wait for 30 seconds before you repeat the step.
Move the STIC steering control lever against the steering frame lock. Continue to move the STIC steering control lever against the steering frame lock in order to obtain a reliable pressure reading.
Record the pressure reading on the
