Separate the transmission and the torque converter. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Transmission and Torque Converter - Separate". Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before you begin the removal procedure, the exterior of the components should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Use Tooling (A) to compress retaining ring (2). Use two people in order to remove transfer gear (1). The weight of transfer gear (1) is approximately 25 kg (55 lb).

Use Tooling (B) to remove retaining ring (2). Remove plates (4) and sun gear (3).
