When using the optional ride control system, on the 988F and 990 wheel loaders, and taking advantage of the increased travel speed, some special operating techniques should be observed. Do not rely entirely upon the brakes to slow the machine when approaching a truck, crusher or face. Relying solely upon the brakes to reduce machine speed can cause excessive heat build up in the axle, reducing brake and bearing life.
Excessive heat build up can oxidize the axle oil resulting in blackened, burnt smelling oil with poor lubricating properties. In some cases failures of wheel bearings can occur in a few hundred hours. Brake energy and heat generation is four times greater at 35 km/h (22 mph) than at 21 km/h (13 mph).
As the machine approaches a truck, crusher or face, use the engine to reduce speed before applying the brakes. Reducing engine speed and down shifting will substantially reduce the heat load on the brakes. If engine braking is not used and the brakes are required to dissipate all the energy to slow the machine, brake and axle bearing life will be greatly reduced.
Decelerating with the engine will slightly increase cycle time over using brakes alone. However, the increase in production over a machine not equipped with ride control is still substantial.
The higher travel speeds made possible by ride control may also allow the machine to exceed the ton mile per hour rating of the tires. For more information concerning the ton mile per hour rating of the tires on your machine consult the local tire supplier.
The above applies specifically to repetitive load and carry cycles.
