Reference: See Engine News, SEB9238, November 1996, "New Inconel Bellows Liner Positioning for New Replacement Bellows Assembly". Disregard the previous article.The following parts are made of Inconel: the 122-8614 Bellows As, the 129-0793 Bellows As and the 190-6622 Bellows As. These bellows assemblies are found on engines that are equipped with ABB VTC 254 turbochargers. The Inconel bellows provide increased service life in high temperature applications.The 122-8614 Bellows As is a service replacement for the 7E-8296 Bellows As on 3606 engines. The 7E-8296 Bellows As has no sleeves. The bellows assembly fits over the snout (1) on the exhaust manifold.The 129-0793 Bellows As is a service replacement for the 4P-0439 Bellows As on 3612 engines. The 4P-0439 Bellows As has no sleeves. The 129-0793 Bellows As is supplied with an Inconel sleeve. However, this sleeve will not fit over the top of the snout on the exhaust manifold. The sleeve should be discarded.Alternatively, the snout can be removed from the following parts: the 112-3414 Manifold Pipe, the 112-3419 Manifold Pipe, the 112-3412 Exhaust Manifold and the 112-3413 Exhaust Manifold. This is shown in Illustration 1. The surface finish of the flange on the manifold (2) must remain at class F after the snout is removed. If the snout is removed from the manifold pipes and from the exhaust manifolds, the Inconel sleeve that is supplied with the 129-0793 Bellows As must be used. The flange on the sleeve must be installed between the bellows and the exhaust manifold so that the open end of the sleeve is toward the turbocharger. Removal of the snout enhances the serviceability of the manifold and of the turbocharger.The 190-6622 Bellows As is used in production and as a service replacement on 3616 engines. The Inconel bellows assembly is supplied with an Inconel sleeve. This sleeve must be used with exhaust manifolds that do not have a snout that protects the bellows assembly from the flow of exhaust. The 172-1637 Exhaust Manifold and the 172-1640 Exhaust Manifold do not have snouts. Some versions of the 125-2440 Exhaust Manifold and the 125-2452 Exhaust Manifold do not have snouts. The sleeve should not be used with earlier versions of the 125-2440 Exhaust Manifold and with earlier versions of the 125-2452 Exhaust Manifold. These exhaust manifolds have a snout that does not require a sleeve.When you install the 190-6622 Bellows As with the sleeve, the flange on the sleeve must be installed between the bellows assembly and the exhaust manifold. When the sleeve is installed in this direction, the open end of the sleeve will be toward the turbocharger. If the sleeve is installed in the opposite direction, exhaust gas will be forced between the sleeve and the bellows. This will shorten the life of the bellows.
