Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Failed Turbocharger Seals
A. Check the inlet manifold and the exhaust manifold for oil.
Turbocharger seals
Result: Oil is NOT present in the inlet manifold and exhaust manifold.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: Oil is present in the inlet manifold and exhaust manifold.
Replace the turbocharger. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Turbocharger - Remove" and Disassembly and Assembly, "Turbocharger - Install".
2. Worn Valve Guide Seals or Faulty Valve Guide Seals
A. Inspect the valve guide seals for wear and/or damage.
Valve guide seals
Result: The valve guide seals are NOT worn and/or damaged.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: The valve guide seals are worn and/or damaged.
Replace the valve guide seals, as required.
3. Worn Valve Guides
A. Inspect the valve guides for wear.
Refer to Specifications for the tolerances of the valve guides.
Valve guides
Result: The valve guides are NOT worn.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The valve guides are worn.
Replace the valve guides, if necessary.
4. Worn Piston Rings
A. Inspect the piston ring.
Piston rings
Result: The piston rings are NOT worn.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: The piston rings are worn.
Replace the piston rings, as required.
5. Scored Cylinder Walls or Worn Cylinder Walls
A. Inspect the cylinder liners for damage.
Refer to Reuse and Salvage Guidelines, "Inspection of Cylinder Liners in 3300, 3400, and C9-C32 Engines" for more information.
Cylinder liners
Result: The cylinder liner walls are NOT scored.
Result: The cylinder liner walls are scored.
Hone the cylinder liners in order to removed scoring.
