Removal Procedure
Start By:
Remove the engine support. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Support - Remove and Install".
Remove the crankshaft front seal and the wear sleeve. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankshaft Front Seal and Wear Sleeve - Remove".
Remove the water pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Water Pump - Remove".
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Disconnect harness assembly (1) .
Remove nut (2) and the washer (not shown).
Remove ten bolts (4) and clip (3) .
Remove cover (5) .

Remove bolts (8) , timing ring (6) , spacer (7) (not shown), and gear (9) .

Remove nut (10) and the washer .

Remove six bolts (11) and the washers .
Remove bolts (12) and the washers .
Remove timing gear cover (13) . Remove the gasket for the timing gear cover.Installation Procedure
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

If necessary, install a new gasket on the cylinder block.
Install timing gear cover (13) and bolts (12) .
Install six bolts (11) .Note: If a new gasket was installed, cut the bottom of the gasket even with the surface on the timing gear cover.

Install nut (10) and the washer .

Note: Install timing ring (6) with the timing hole straight up.
Install gear (9) , spacer (7) and timing ring (6) . Install bolts (8) .

Install cover (5) , clip (3) , and bolts (4) .
Install nut (2) and the washer (not shown).
Connect harness assembly (1) .End By:
Install the water pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Water Pump - Install".
Install the crankshaft front seal and the wear sleeve. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankshaft Front Seal and Wear Sleeve - Install".
Install the engine support. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Support - Remove and Install".
