Gradual tapered weld start
The grooves on some adapters may extend beyond the front end of the base edge. Welds on those adapters or any adapter should always end before reaching the front edge of the base edge, (U) illustration 12. Welds on J200 adapters through J550 adapters should end no closer than 10 mm (0.4 inch) to the front of the base edge. Welds on J600 adapters through J800 adapters should end no closer than 15 mm (0.59 inch) to the front of the base edge.

. When you are replacing a corner adapter, preheat both the bottom edge of the side bar and the top of the adapter to 190° C (375° F) to 260° C (500° F) before welding. Normally, it is not necessary to preheat any excavator side bar or loader side bars that are less than 25.4 mm (1.00 inch) in thickness. Many excavator side bars, though thicker, may not require preheating. However, it is a good procedural practice to always preheat as it reduces chances of having poor quality welds
. There may be a large gap created between the adapter and the side bar when the side bar was first cut free of the adapter. Apply a stringer weld to one side of the joint. The stringer weld may be thin and uneven. Apply a root pass and several additional passes to one side of the joint filling up about half of the gap. Then go to the opposite side of the joint and gouge out the underside of the original stringer weld with an air carbon arc torch. Apply several welds to the side just gouged out until half filled. Complete the weldment with alternating welds to each side of the side bar until complete. When applying fillet welds extend the welds around the front edge of the side bar and along the sides at least 25.4 mm (1.00 inch) without any stop or starts. Refer to illustrations 13 and 14. Blend the welds smoothly into the side bar and the adapter top strap.
Cover the finished weldments with thermal insulating material.
Remove the starter plates. Grind any starter welds that may have left tracks on the base edge until the welds are smooth with the surface.

The toe of the welds act as stress concentrators. Despite weldments that seem good, cracks may develop at the toe of the weld. These cracks may develop from any of
