(6) Cone assembly (outlet)The emissions solution for this engine consists of a three-way catalyst for stoichiometric engines. The Caterpillar three-way catalyst reduces the nitrogen oxides (NOX), carbon monoxide (CO), and hydrocarbons (HC) from natural gas engine exhaust. The three-way catalyst consists of platinum and other Platinum Group Metals (PGM) deposited onto a substrate. If the three-way catalyst is made by another manufacturer, refer to the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) service information.Untreated exhaust gas enters cone assembly (inlet) (1). The exhaust gas is treated as the gas passes through catalyst substrate (4). The treated exhaust gas exits the catalytic convertor through cone assembly (outlet) (6). V-band clamp (2) and seal (3) are used to provide leak-free assembly. Sleeve (5) can be replaced with an additional catalyst element to provide an increased treatment capacity for the catalytic convertor.Proper installation of the catalytic converter is essential to ensure the required performance and life of the emissions solution. To meet the required performance, the pipe length between the turbocharger outlet and the converter is critical. The catalytic converter must be close-coupled to the engine exhaust elbow. The close mounting proximity to the engine will allow for increased inlet exhaust temperatures to the catalyst. The higher catalyst temperatures results in greater catalytic conversion efficiency. The close mounting proximity to the engine will also provide for better accessibility to the unit for catalyst maintenance.For applications with a vertical exhaust stack, the catalyst must be protected from external water entering the stack.
