PRIORITY - PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM FOR REWORKING THE FAN PULLEY GROUP
MODELS INVOLVED - CERTAIN 3516 GENERATOR SETS
Dear Caterpillar Product Owner:
The current fan pulley belts are failing at very early hours. The root cause is that the fan pulley group is undersized. Your fan pulley needs to be reworked on certain 3516 generator sets.
You will not be charged for the service performed.
Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service.
Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated 09Mar2007 when scheduling this service.

Rework Procedure
This is a two person job. Support of the radiator fan and positioning of fan drive support beam maybe required.
1.0 Ensure the engine has cooled sufficiently to prevent personal injury from contact with hot cooling tubes and the starting system is disabled by removing battery negative terminal or turning battery disconnect switch to the off position.
1.1 Remove all guards from the fan drive shaft, pulley, and belts.
1.2 IMPORTANT! Measure and record the distance between the centerline of the fan pulley shaft and the centerline of the crank pulley shaft. With belts installed, record original belt tension. This dimension must be duplicated with the new crossbeam. Accuracy of the measurement must be within ? 5mm.
1.3 Remove the fan belts, and loose belt tightener and slide tensioner to complete loose position
1.4. Remove the fan pulley and idler pulley.
1.5 Install the fan drive pulley.
Total maximum allowed misalignment of 3mm. Second, the fan drive pulley, crank pulley, and idler pulley must be aligned in fore - and - aft, this is required to allow the belts to run true use straight edge / Plum line align all three pulleys across pulley faces.
1.6 Spin the fan and check for concentricity with the cowl ring. Adjust as necessary.
1.7 Align the idler pulley, fan pulley, and crank pulley.
1.8 Torque all the remaining fasteners. Except tension positioning bolts.
1.9 Install and tension the fan belts. Torque all remaining fasteners
2.0 Install the new guard. Guard will require four new 12.2mm clearence holes in fan and idler supports.

2.1 Reconnect battery negative terminal or return disconnect switch to on position and return unit to service.
