Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Note: Some engines are equipped with twin turbochargers. The following story contains the removal procedure for single turbochargers. The same procedure is followed for twin turbochargers.Note: There are many possible configurations of the turbocharger and exhaust systems. The following procedure illustrates a typical example.

Disconnect turbocharger oil supply line (2). Cap all male ends and plug all female ends immediately.
Remove bolt (1) and the washer.

Remove two bolts (3).
Move oil supply tube (2) for the turbocharger away from the turbocharger. Remove the O-ring seal from turbocharger oil supply line (2).
Remove two bolts (4) that secure turbocharger oil drain line (5) to the turbocharger. Remove the O-ring seal from turbocharger oil drain line (5).

Remove four bolts (7), the nuts, and the washers.
Use a strap and a suitable lifting device in order to remove turbocharger (6).
Remove gasket (8) for the turbocharger.
