3600 Family Of EnginesReference: Guideline For Salvage Operations; "Procedures To Salvage Oil Pan Assemblies - 3600 Family of Engines"; SEBF8160.Description of Change: Several new oil pan assemblies are used in the improved oil pan groups. The new oil pan assemblies eliminate the possible formation of fatigue cracks near an internal baffle and sidewall weld joint in the oil pan. The fatigue cracks could cause oil to leak and deplete the oil supply. The new oil pan design uses a stiffened baffle, and an improved baffle-to-sidewall connection to reduce stress. The new assemblies also have lower drain ports to permit the oil to drain more completely during an oil change. See Illustration 1. An improved oil filler group is also used with the new oil pan assemblies. The improved group contains a new tube assembly and two new seals. These changes accommodate the changes made to the oil pan baffles.
Three new oil level contactor groups are used with the new oil filler group. The leads of the new contactor groups exit the engine through the crankcase side cover instead of the front end of the oil pan. The new contactor groups can only be used with the new oil filler group.
Adaptable To: See Chart A for the new and former oil pan assembly part numbers and their effectivity. The improved 9Y9927 Oil Filler Group (not serviced as a group) is a direct replacement for the former 9Y9927 and 1W0799 Oil Filler Groups (not canceled). The new contactor groups are adaptable to all 3600 Engines except those mounted with more than a two degree front downward angle. To adapt this change to an earlier engine, there are two options available.
1. Repair the oil pan if possible.2. A new oil pan can be installed. If the oil pan can be salvaged, the Reference contains detailed instructions to repair a leaky oil pan. If the oil pan requires replacement, use the information in this article to install a new oil pan assembly and make the necessary changes.

Illustration 2. Former 4W3953 Oil Pan Assembly.Procedure To Install New Oil Pan On Earlier Engines
To install a new oil pan assembly on an earlier engine, use the following points to determine which components are required. Chart B lists the cylinder that must be used to install the improved 9Y9927 Oil Filler Group on an earlier engine.
- If the engine contains the former oil pan and 1W0799 Oil Filler Group (not serviced), an improved 9Y9927 Oil Filler Group must be used with the new oil pan assembly.- If the engine contains the former oil pan and former 9Y9927 Oil Filler Group, install Items 4, 7, and 9 as shown in Chart C and Illustration 3. Although several changes have been made to the former 9Y9927 Oil Filler Group, the part number for the improved group has not changed. The difference between the improved and the former 9Y9927 Oil Filler Group is shown in
