3512 and 3516 Engines Equipped With A 584.2 mm (23.00"
) DamperDescription of Change: An improved 1W4932 Damper Grard Assembly is used on the above engines. There is a cutout in the outer diameter of the improved damper guard assembly. Formerly, there were two wires on the inner side toward the front timing cover. See the illustration. When a 584.2 mm (23.00") diameter damper was used, there was sometimes not enough clearance between the damper and the water pump housing to remove the guard. If the guard could not be removed, the two wires shown in the illustration were removed. The improved 1W4932 Damper Guard Assembly does not have the two wires shown in the illustration. The part number has not changed.
Location of the two wires to be removed from earlier 1W4932 Damper Guard Assemblies. Caterpillar cooling system conditioner coats the metal with a film, preventing corrosion and pitting. However, it does wear out and must be replenished. Adding conditioner in recommended amounts every 250 service meter hours, or when changing oil filters, will prevent pitting, lengthening your engine's life.
For a detailed explanation, ask for a copy of, "Questions and Answers About Cylinder Wall Pitting (PEDP 1101)."
Begin Cooling System Cleaning
A. Clean cooling system adds to valve life with good heat transfer.
B. Cooling system scale reduces heat transfer, causes hot spots and warps valves.Every two years, schedule a cooling system flush and cleaning. If your system is not kept clean, rust and scale build up. Scale retards heat transfer. Because of its insulating properties, only 1/16 in. mineral scale can cause a 40% drop in heat transfer. In the valve area, this can result in warped valves which will not seat, causing loss of power and economy!
Misadjusted Valves Rob Power
Valves must be adjusted periodically, following the recommendation in your Operation And Maintenance Guide. Failure to do so reduces valve life, engine efficiency and economy.
Too much valve lash and the valve train does not ride the cam lobe up and down in a smooth continuous motion. Instead, it is "bumped" open with a jerk, beating in the contact portions of the valve stem, rocker arm, push rod, etc., increasing lash even more. The increased lash reduces the length of time valves are open which reduces the amount of waste or burnt gasses that can be removed and the amount of fresh combustion air filling the cylinders. This lowers engine efficiency and causes excessive fuel consumption.
Localized high temperature melted valve face and caused deep guttering. Too little lash and the valves may not close. This reduces compression by letting hot combustion gasses pass causing burnt valves and loss of performance. Also, if the valve remains open, the combustion pressure may force it closed momentarily, unduly flexing the valve train. In any event, performance and efficiency are reduced by misadjusted valves.
For more detail on valves, ask for a copy of, "Questions And Answers About Valves (PEDP0001)."
