Remove the rocker shaft assemblies and the pushrods. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Rocker Shaft and Push Rod - Remove".
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: Repeat the procedure for each cylinder head.
Drain the coolant from the cooling system into a suitable container for storage or disposal.

Remove the bolts that fasten bracket (1) to the water manifold.
Remove the bolts from the valve cover base (2). Remove valve cover base (2) from the cylinder head.

Remove exhaust temperature sensor (3) from the cylinder head.

Remove the bolts from air inlet elbow (5). Remove gasket (7).
Remove the bolts and tube (4) . Remove gaskets (6).

Remove the bolts from exhaust elbow (9). Remove gasket (8).

Install Tooling (A) on cylinder head (11). Use the holes for the bolts that hold the valve cover base.
Fasten a suitable lifting device to cylinder head (11).
Remove bolts (10) and bolts (12) from cylinder head (11).
Remove cylinder head (11) from the engine. The weight of cylinder head (1) is approximately 47 kg (105 lb).

Remove cylinder head gasket (16), four seals (13), four seals (14), and O-ring seal (15) from the spacer plate.
Remove spacer plate (17).

Remove spacer plate gasket (18) from the dowels.
Remove O-ring seal (19) from the dowel.
