Introduction
This kit will make it easier to do the correct preventive maintenance operations on Caterpillar engines. Careful use of this instruction and a thorough visual inspection of your engine will give added performance, reliability, economy and service life. Use this instruction along with the correct Operation and Maintenance Guide for additional safety and preventive maintenance information.Scheduled Oil Sampling (S O S) (If The Kit Contains A Sample Bottle).
Operate the engine until it is at the normal operating temperature. When an oil sample gun is used, fill the sample bottle approximately 75% full. If a sample is taken from the oil drain stream do not get the sample from the first part or the last part of the oil drain. Use caution to prevent burns or injuries caused by the hot oil. Fill out the sample and shipment labels and send the sample container to your Caterpillar Dealer for the S O S test. Make sure Engine Serial Number, miles on oil, and unit number are indicated. See PEHP6001 entitled How to Take a Good Oil Sample for more information.Oil Filters
Remove the engine oil filter or oil filters. Clean the filter base and be sure the old seal is removed. On "spin-on" filters, the seal usually comes off with the filter. Put clean engine oil on the filter seal but do not fill the filter with oil. Install the oil filter by hand, tighten the filter 3/4 turn after the seal contacts the oil filter base. Install the crankcase oil drain plug and fill the crankcase to the "FULL" mark on the dipstick. Start the engine and check for leaks. Stop the engine and let the oil drain into the engine oil pan. Check the engine oil level and add oil as necessary.Cooling System Conditioner
Do not add cooling system conditioner at initial fill of cooling system, when using Caterpillar antifreeze. Add conditioner at normal intervals according to maintenance instructions.Slowly loosen the radiator cap to release the pressure in the radiator. Add Caterpillar cooling system conditioner to the radiator, or if the engine is equipped with a coolant conditioner element close the inlet and outlet valves and remove the element. Clean the filter mounting base and be the old seal is removed. Put clean engine oil on the seal on the new element. Install the new element and turn the element 3/4 turn after the seal makes contact with the filter mounting base. Open the inlet and outlet valves. Install the radiator cap. Start the engine and check for leaks.Fuel Filter
Turn the fuel supply valve off and remove the fuel filter. Clean the filter mounting base and be sure the old seal is removed. Put clean fuel on the fuel filter and install the filter. Turn the filter 1/2 to 3/4 after the seal makes contact with the filter mounting base. Do not pour fuel into the filter before installation. Open the vent valve (if equipped). Turn the fuel supply valve on and use the hand pump (if equipped) to
