Remove the cylinder head. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Cylinder Head - Remove".
Remove the piston cooling jet. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Piston Cooling Jet - Remove and Install".
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Drain the engine oil into a suitable container for storage or for disposal. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Oil and Filter - Change".
Illustration 1 g03405954Note: Inspect the connecting rod and connecting rod cap for the proper identification mark. The connecting rod and the connecting rod cap should have an etched number on the side. The number should match the cylinder number. Mark the connecting rod and the connecting rod cap, if necessary. Careful handling is required for fractured connecting rods. The connecting rod and the rod cap should be placed on the sides to prevent damage. When possible, the connecting rod and the rod cap should be bolted together to prevent damage.
Use Tooling (A) to rotate the flywheel to access the connecting rod cap that will be removed.
Remove bolts (1), spacers (2), and connecting rod cap (3). Position the crankshaft so that the piston is at the bottom dead center. Inspect the connecting rod bearing for wear or for damage.
