On earlier machines tire/rim slippage and O-ring seal failures can be the result of incorrect tire mounting procedures. If tire/rim slippage is a problem, remove the tire from the rim and use the following procedure to install the tire on the rim.
Procedure To Mount Tire On A 3V141 Demountable Rim Group
1. Make sure the tire, rim and all components are clean and dry. Use solvent to clean all tire lubrication from the tire. Use soap and water as a final cleaning solution.2. Remove any nicks, burrs, rust and debris which could prevent an airtight seal between the tire and the rim.3. When mounting bias and bias belted tires, use only soap and water as a mounting lubricant.4. When mounting radial tires, apply a thin coat of undiluted tire mounting compound to both tire beads and the tapered area of the rim (shown as Area A on the illustration).5. Mount the tire on the rim and push it back as far as possible.6. Center the tire on the rim and install the 9V7919 Flange.7. Apply a thin, undiluted coat of tire mounting compound (on bias and bias belted tires use soap and water only) to Area B as shown in the illustration.8. Make sure the 4K4879 O-ring Seal and the O-ring groove in the rim are clean and dry and free of nicks, burrs and debris. Install the O-ring dry. Do not twist or roll the O-ring while installing it.9. After the O-ring is installed, lubricate it lightly with undiluted tire mounting compound.10. Install the 4K4881 Lock Ring, the 9V7918 Plate and the two 5K7138 Bolts.11. Remove the cap and valve core and inflate the tire to 70 kPa (10 psi).
Always use a protective cage or equivalent during inflation. Do not allow anyone to stand in front of a tire during inflation. The tire could explode and cause personal injury.
12. Make sure all tire and rim components are in place and the tire beads are correctly seated. Install the valve core and inflate the tire to 620 kPa (90 psi).13. Inflate or deflate as necessary to get the correct tire pressure shown in the Maintenance Guide section of the Service Manual. Install the cap on the valve stem.
