Both multiple disc brakes are removed as a unit with the propel motor to which it is connected. Refer to the topic "Remove & Install Propel Motors" in this module for further information.Disassemble & Assemble Brake
Start by:A. Remove the Brake The disassembly and assembly procedures are the same for either the right or the left multiple disc brake. 1. Remove O-ring seal (1) from cover (2).2. Remove two screws (3). Remove cover (2). Check the condition of the gasket located beneath cover (2) and replace if needed. 3. Remove retaining ring (4). Use tool (A) to remove retaining ring (6).4. Use a soft punch or mallet to tap shaft assembly (5) from cover (2). 5. Remove retaining ring (7). Separate hub (8) from shaft assembly (5). 6. Position cover (2) in a press as shown. Use tooling (B) to remove bearing (9) and seal (10).
Do not attempt to remove bolts (11) without first installing tooling (C) and pressurizing the brake assembly. Failure to follow the proper procedure can result in damage to the brake assembly.
7. Install tooling (C) as shown. Pressurize the brake assembly to a minimum of 1370 kPa (200 psi). Remove bolts (11). Release the pressure from the brake assembly. Remove tooling (C).8. Remove primary disc (12), rotor disc (13), stator disc (14) and rotor disc (15).9. Remove bolts (16). Separate spring plate (17) and pressure plate (18). Check the condition of the gasket located between plates (17) and (18). Replace if needed.
Mark springs (19) for identification and location purposes. Replace worn or broken springs using the correct parts in their original positions.
10. Remove springs (19).
When removing piston (20) avoid damaging or scratching the piston surface. Removal may be aided by carefully applying slight air or hydraulic pressure into the brake release port located on pressure plate (18).
11. Remove piston (20).12. Remove inside O-ring seal and back up ring (21). Check the condition of O-ring seal and back up ring (21) and replace if needed.13. Remove outside O-ring seal and back up ring (22). Check the condition of O-ring seal and back up ring (22) and replace if needed.
Be sure all parts are thoroughly clean and free of dirt and debris. Remove any scratches or burrs from brake components with polishing paper or an oil stone. Check the condition of all O-ring seals, back up rings, gaskets, and springs. If any brake components are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement. Put clean hydraulic oil on the brake components as they are being installed. Be sure to install all parts in the correct position in their original locations.
The following steps are for assembling the brake.14. Install O-ring seals and back up rings (21) and (22).15. Install piston (20), making sure not to scratch the piston or twist the O-ring seals.16. Press piston (20) into pressure plate (18) until it
