Illustration 2.
Hook Control Linkages.(1) Spacer nut.(2) Lever.(S) Rod.Several guidelines have been developed to ensure proper operation of the boom and hook winch controls. These guidelines relate to the proper adjustment of the control linkages. The control linkages require precise adjustment due to the fact that the linkages operate two separate control valves simultaneously.
Do not operate the machine if the hook and boom control levers do not return to the neutral position. This indicates a need for linkage adjustment. Failure to adjust the boom and hook control linkages properly may result in loss of lifting capacity and/or inoperable winch controls.
Adjustment Guidelines
Lever And Bellcrank Orientation
The levers and bellcranks in both linkage assemblies must be oriented as shown in illustrations 1 and 2. The levers and bellcranks should be assembled horizontal and vertical in order to achieve equtravel for the controls on both sides of neutral.
Rod Orientation
The rods must be assembled to the correct side of the levers and bellcranks as shown in illustrations 1 and 2. The rods must be free to rotate after adjustment and tightening.
Spacer Nut Position
Spacer nut (1) in both illustration 1 and 2 are critical parts for proper linkage operation.
Linkage Lever Replacement
583R (2XS1-392) Pipelayers may need a linkage lever replacement. Lever (2), shown in illustration 2, may not provide sufficient movement of the control spool in order to maintain high speed winch movement in some cases. A new 9P-0391 Lever is now used. This lever is a direct replacement for the former 9W-5628 Lever. The new lever is effective on 583R (2XS393-Up) Pipelayers. Install the new lever, if needed, and adjust the linkage as described below.
Ball Joint Rod End Maintenance
The ball joint rod ends are special, stainless steel, zero clearance ball joints. Do not lubricate the ball joint rod ends (WD-40, oil, etc.). They are designed to operate completely dry. Lubrication of these parts will collect dirt, increasing friction and wear. An increase in control lever effort may indicate the need for cleaning of the rod ends. Occasional cleaning with 4C-4079 Brake and Electrical Component Cleaner will improve performance and extend component life.
Adjustment Procedure
Reference: Refer to SENR1809, 583R Pipelayer Hydraulic Systems Operation Testing and Adjusting, "Linkage Adjustments" for the proper adjustment and test procedure. When adjusting the control linkages, always begin at the control lever and work towards the winch control valves. Use the assembly lengths that are published in the service manual as a reference only.Hook Control Linkages Final Adjustment
