Remove the rear wheels. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim (Rear) - Remove and Install" for the machine that is being serviced.
Remove the front crankcase guard. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankcase Guard - Remove and Install" for the machine that is being serviced.
Remove the power train guard. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Powertrain Guard (Transmission) - Remove and Install" for the machine that is being serviced.
Remove the rear drive shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Drive Shaft (Rear) - Remove and Install" for the machine that is being serviced.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
At operating temperature, the steering and brake hydraulic oil tank is hot and under pressure. Hot oil can cause burns.To prevent possible personal injury, release the pressure in the steering and brake hydraulic system before hydraulic lines or components are disconnected or removed.
Note: Put identification marks on all lines, on all hoses, on all wires and on all tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, all hoses and all tubes. This will help to prevent fluid loss and this will help to keep contaminants from entering the system.Note: The wood blocks that were placed between the rear axle housing and the rear main frame must remain in place. This will prevent the axle housing from oscillating during the removal procedure.
Drain the oil from the rear axle housing and from the final drive assemblies into a suitable container.

Typical Example
Install Tooling (A) and a suitable clevis to the rear axle, as shown. Repeat this procedure for the opposite side.
Attach a suitable hoist, Tooling (B) and suitable lifting cables to Tooling (A) .
Support the axle with the hoist. The weight of the rear axle assembly is 6500 kg (14330 lb).

Disconnect hose assembly (1) from manifold (2) on the top of the rear axle.
Remove the tube assemblies from the front and rear trunnion supports.

Remove eight bolts (3) and the washers on each side of the rear trunnion support.

Remove two bolts (5) and the washers from each side of the front trunnion support.Note: Before removing the rear oscillating axle from the machine, ensure that all lines, tubes, and hoses have been disconnected.

Typical Example
Use the hoist in order to lower the rear axle assembly onto a suitable trailer, as shown.
Remove the lifting cables and Tooling (A) .
Pull the rear axle assembly outward by using a suitable towing machine.
