Schematic of the transmission output speed sensor (No.1)
This diagnostic code is associated with the transmission output speed sensor (No.1). This diagnostic code is recorded when the Power Train/Chassis Electronic Control Module (ECM) reads the signal of the sensor as being out of range. The machine must be moving in order to initially record the diagnostic code for the sensor. The FMI 08 means that the ECM has received an abnormal signal from the sensor.Note: This diagnostic code is usually an intermittent condition. The diagnostic code can be active or the diagnostic code can be not active. The possible causes of this condition are listed:
The signal circuit is intermittently shorted to the +battery circuit or shorted to frame ground.
The sensor has failed.Note: The machine must be moving in order to initially record a sensor diagnostic code.Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these diagnostic codes and clear the diagnostic codes when the original diagnostic code has been corrected. Ensure that the diagnostic code of CID 0585 FMI 08 is active before performing this procedure.System Response:The ECM is receiving erratic information from the sensor over the CAT Data Link. If the transmission output speed sensors (No.1) and (No.2) and the engine speed sensor are working properly, this diagnostic code will have no effect on the machine response.Test Step 1. CHECK THE SENSOR.
Turn the battery disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
Ensure that the diagnostic code is active.
Disconnect the sensor from the machine harness. Expected Result:The diagnostic code is no longer active. Results:
YES - The diagnostic code is no longer active. The sensor has failed.Repair: Replace the sensor. Verify that the new sensor corrected this diagnostic code. The diagnostic code should not be active.STOP
NO - The diagnostic code remains active. The sensor is not the cause of the diagnostic code. Proceed to Test Step 2.Test Step 2. CHECK FOR A SHORT TO +BATTERY
The sensor remains disconnected from the machine harness.
Turn the key start switch and the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the J1 and J2 machine harness connectors from the ECM.
At the J2 machine harness connector for the ECM, measure the resistance between the signal contact J2-35 (wire 710-GN(Green)) to all other possible sources of +battery. Expected Result:Each resistance measurement should be greater than 5 ohms. Results:
OK - The resistance is greater than
