3406B (7FB) Truck EnginesDescription of Change: New dipsticks are used in 3406B Truck Engines that have either the 7C4029 or 7W4460 Oil Pan Group used in trucks with set-back front axles. The new dipsticks do not have the traditional "Full" mark. Instead they have a "Full Range" . See the illustration. These new dipsticks are necessary because of the many different engine installations; tilted either front-to-back or side-to-side. Use the "Oil Level Gauge (Dipstick) Marking Procedure" that follows to be sure the "Add" and "Full" marks on the dipstick are correct for each application.Adaptable To: The following oil pan groups are used on 3406B Engine applications in trucks with setback front axles. The 7W4460 Oil Pan Group includes a 7W5249 Oil Pan and a 9N3167 Spacer Plate (block bottom). The 7C4029 Oil Pan Group includes the 7C3236 Oil Pan and NO spacer plate. Both of these oil pan groups can be used in either front or rear sump configurations. The 7W7776 Oil Level Gauge (Dipstick) is used with the front sump configurations and the 7C4024 Oil Level Gauge (Dipstick) is used with the rear sump configurations.
New and earlier dipsticks.Oil Level Gauge (Dipstick) Marking Procedure
Use this procedure to calibrate "Full Range" dipsticks used on 3406B Truck Engines. This procedure can be used for either 7C3236 Oil Pans (uses no spacer plate) or 7W5249 Oil Pans (with 9N3167 Spacer Plate). The sump capacity with either oil pan group is the same. The mounting flange dimension for the 7C3236 Oil Pan (uses no spacer plate) is the same as the total dimension of the flange for the 7W5249 Oil Pan and 9N3167 Spacer Plate. A convenient time to calibrate the dipstick is at the first oil change.
1. Park the truck on a level surface. Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature and shut off.2. Drain the oil and change the oil filter.3. Add 30.3 L (32 qt) of oil to the crankcase.4. Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature and shut off.5. Allow a minimum of 30 minutes for the oil to drain back into the sump.6. Check the oil level on the dipstick. The oil level should be at the "Add" mark. If it is not, mark the oil level on the dipstick. This is the correct "Add" mark.7. Add an additional 3.8 L (4qt) to the sump. After allowing a minimum of 30 minutes for the oil to drain into the sump, check the oil level. The oil level is at the location on the dipstick that should be marked as "Full".
