PIPE-OIL RETURN 3242852 - Caterpillar

If a machine contains an output shaft that has its bearing shoulder machined too long, it can be corrected in-frame, without reworking the output shaft. This can be accomplished by installing a spacer with an enlarged chamfer. The following procedure is recommended.
Procedure To Install Spacer With Enlarged Chamfers
1. Obtain the correct parts service spacer, or machine a spare spacer of the appropriate part number to the dimensions shown in Illustration 1.

(B) = 2.50 0.25 mm (.100 .010 in) Two places. (C) = 61.00 mm (2.402 in). (D) = 76.20 mm (3.000 in).2. Remove the front drive shaft (Wheel Loaders only).3. Check the amount of endplay in the output shaft and compare it to the specifications for the machine in question. If there is an excessive amount of endplay, the bearing has probably slipped on the output shaft. However, the bearing still may not be fully seated against the transfer gear.4. Remove the bolt, retainer plate, yoke (or flange), bearing cage or seal, and the spacer. Inspect the seal for damage. If the spacer has been pulled through the seal, the seal has probably been damaged. See Illustration 2.

Install the modified spacer (or the new parts service spacer), and install the parts removed in Step 4. Install a new seal if necessary.6. Tighten the retaining bolt to the specified torque. This will seat the bearing if it is not already seated.7. Check the amount of endplay in the output shaft. Shim the bearing cage as required to obtain the specified endplay.8. Install the front drive shaft (Wheel Loaders only).
