REPLACE ELEMENTS IN OIL SEPARATOR GROUP, Turbocharged-Aftercooled 3208 Marine Engines, 1317, 1202, 1161, PI7107 U-60 A-39 AU-51 B-24 C-55 E-37 O-45 TM-5 optional parts stock action needed Problem Turbocharged and aftercooled 3208 Marine Engines are equipped with an oil separation system (fumes disposal) for separating oil from crankcase fumes and directing the fumes into the engine air inlet. This system on the listed engines includes only three oil separator elements. These elements are of fiber material and can become plugged before the recommended time for change, which is the normal oil change interval of 200 SMH. This plugging causes excessive crankcase pressure, and possibly an oil leak at the crankshaft rear seal or other locations. Later engines use six aluminum mesh elements of a different design to reduce element plugging. These elements should not require replacement between normal oil changes. Affected Engines And New Parts Needed 3208 Marine Engines, 1Z1-1Z4285, turbocharged and aftercooled. New Parts: 6 - 8S8032 Element-Breather Action Requested (Parts Stock Action Needed) For all affected engines in Caterpillar and OEM dealer inventories (non-aftercooled engines do not have these elements), replace the three 4W2576 Elements with the six new breather elements. There are two at each location. Do this before delivery. The elements are inside the 4W2579 Filter Group on the side of the engine. This is the breather canister for fumes disposal. It may be necessary to force the inside cover down slightly on the new elements so you can start the retaining nuts. For engines in service, the user can install the new mesh elements at the next oil change. If a complaint caused by plugged earlier elements is received before a regular oil change, install new elements before the oil change. Explain to the user that the new aluminum elements are to be inspected at each oil change. They can either be replaced or cleaned in a solvent and reused. If cleaned, they must be dried thoroughly before reinstalling in the breather canister. Remove all 4W2576 Elements from parts stocks.
