General Balance Information
Proper tractor balance under load is crucial for maximizing tractor performance and minimizing compaction. One method to change tractor balance is through the use of ballast weights. Three different types of weight are available:- Front (chin) - 612 kg (1350 lb)- Front (bumper) - 364 kg (800 lb)- Side (track roller frame) - 499 kg (1100 lb)Each type of weight is segmented to permit removing and installing weight by hand, without the need for hoisting equipment.Since tracked tractors will pull substantially higher draft loads for a given weight than a wheel-type tractor, less ballast weight is needed. The key to proper ballasting is to use only the minimum amount of weight needed to provide roading stability with three-point hitch-mounted tools and to ensure even weight distribution under the track when pulling a load.* Drawbar-Mounted Implements When using drawbar-mounted implements that provide a light-to-medium draft load, the 364 kg (800 lb) front weight package [or 400 kg (880 lb) of chin weights] is usually sufficient to provide even weight distribution under the track. If the draft load is high, the full 612 kg (1350 lb) of front chin weights or a combination of bumper and chin weights can be used to counteract the weight transfer due to the implement draft. If excessive slip (greater than 6%) is encountered in certain soil types, additional side weights can be added on the track roller frame, as long as the total tractor weight does not exceed 11 590 kg (25,500 lb). Refer to the topic Calculating Tractor Weight in this section for more information.
For satisfactory power train life, maximum continuous operating weight should not exceed 11 590 kg (25,500 lb). This weight must include any added ballast, additional weight due to optional belts, and weight of empty chemical tanks and brackets. The tractor can be operated with the additional weight of liquid chemicals or fertilizer, although a total vehicle weight of 14 320 kg (31,500 lb) with full tanks should not be exceeded. Reduction in drive train life should be expected if this additional weight is used to increase drawbar pull at speeds below 7.3 km/h (4.5 mph).Reduce speed and use caution when roading if vehicle weighs more than 11 590 kg (25,500 lb), as undercarriage component life can be reduced under rough roading conditions.
* Three-Point Hitch-Mounted Implements For light-to-medium weight three-point hitch-mounted implements, it is usually sufficient to use either the 364 kg (800 lb) bumper weights or the 612 kg (1350 lb) front chin weight package. Heavy three-point hitch mounted implements [over 4086 kg (9000 lb)] should use both front weight packages. The side weights can also be used if the total tractor weight does not exceed 11 577 kg (25,500 lb). Refer to the subject Calculating Tractor Weight in this section for more information. If the combination of 364 kg (800 lb) and 612 kg (1350 lb) front weights are insufficient to provide an even weight distribution under the tracks when pulling a load, the following guidelines are suggested:1. Readjust/Install
