Weld the pieces of the side plate (31,32) to the stick. Refer to Illustration 19 for welding instructions.

Grind the weld (37) flush with the top plate (27). The reinforcement plate (35) must be flush against the stick prior to welding.
Grind the welds flush with the side plates. Also grind the weld (37) on top of the stick flush with the top plate. Refer to Illustrations 19 and 20.Adding Reinforcement Plates to the Stick
Prepare the stick for welding. Refer to ""Preparing the Metal for Welding"" and Illustration 16.
Inspect the stick for cracks.
Repair cracks by gouging to the depth of the crack. Fill the cracks with the appropriate weld. Refer to ""Welding Requirements"" for selecting the correct electrode or welding wire. Grind the welds flush with the surrounding areas.
Weld two tie bars between the supports (26). The tie bars will prevent deformation of the supports during the welding procedures.

Fabricate the reinforcement plates (35,36). Use the dimensions in this illustration.
Fabricate the reinforcing plates. You will make one reinforcement plate (35) for the top of the stick. You will also need to make a reinforcement plate (36) for both the right and left sides of the stick. Refer to Illustration 21 for plate dimensions.Use carbon steel to fabricate the reinforcement plates. Caterpillar recommends the use of one of the following types of carbon steel: BS4360 Grade 40B, ASTM A36, ASTM572 Grade 42 or 50, ASTM A108 Grades 1008 through 1025, DIN 17100 Grade USt 37-2, AFNOR A35-501Q Grade E24-2, and JIS G4051 Grade S20C.Note: Read all instructions and examine all illustrations before doing any welding.

Attach the reinforcement plates (35,36) to the stick. Use the welds in this illustration.
Weld the top reinforcement plate (35) to the stick. The welds should be smooth and continuous. Welds should proceed from the rear of the stick to the front of the stick. Refer to Illustrations 22 and 23 for placement and welding information.
Position the stick in order to weld a reinforcement plate (36) to the right side of the stick.
Weld a reinforcement plate (36) to the right side of the stick. The welds should be smooth and continuous. Welds should proceed from the rear of the stick to the front of the stick. Refer to Illustrations 22 and 23 for placement and welding information.
Position the stick in order to weld a reinforcement plate (36) to the left side of the stick.

Weld the four studs to the stick. Refer to Illustrations 22 and 23 for placement and welding information.
