All Turbocharged Caterpillar EnginesReference: Service Magazine; September 7, 1987; Page 7; "Be Sure To Correctly Tighten Turbocharger Clamp Assemblies". Reference: Service Magazine; December 16, 1985; Page 4; "Use Care When Handling Turbocharger Compressor Wheels".The following service tips can help prevent damage to the engine and turbocharger when removing and installing turbochargers.
When removing the turbocharger:
1. Be sure turbocharger oil lines and the areas where the lines are connected to engine and turbocharger are clean before disconnecting from the turbocharger and engine.2. Cover all turbocharger and engine ports when oil lines are removed. This will help prevent dirt from entering the oil system.3. Use only clean Scotch-Brite® cleaning pads to remove gasket material or other foreign materials from engine and turbocharger. Be sure no gasket scrapings or other foreign materials fall into the oil system. Sandpaper can generate very abrasive debris and should NOT be allowed to contaminate the lubrication system.When installing the turbocharger:
1. Be sure the areas where gaskets are to be installed are clean and free of foreign material. See the Reference Articles before loosening the V-band clamps.2. Carefully loosen the V-band clamps only enough to allow the compressor and turbine housings to be rotated. See the illustration. If the clamps are loosened too much the housings can contact the compressor and/or turbine blades. This can result in blade damage.
Location of the V-band clamps that secure the compressor and turbine housings to the turbocharger body.3. Position the compressor and turbine housings so they are aligned with the inlet and exhaust piping. Position the turbocharger oil lines so they are aligned with the engine and turbocharger ports. Do NOT tighten the turbocharger mounting bolts at this time.4. With the V-band clamps correctly positioned, tighten the V-band clamp nuts to the specified torque. Lightly tap all around the clamps and tighten again to the specified torque.5. Tighten all the remaining fasteners at this time. In severe applications, it may be beneficial to tighten all gasketed surface joint fasteners again after the first full load cycle of the engine.
