Removal Procedure
Start By:
Remove the engine oil pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Pump - Remove" for the engine that is being serviced.
Remove the oil pan plate. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Oil Pan Plate - Remove and Install" for the engine that is being serviced.

Turn the crankshaft until two pistons are at the BOTTOM CENTER position. Remove connecting rod caps (1) from the two connecting rods. Remove the lower half of the bearings from connecting rod caps (1).
Push the connecting rods away from the crankshaft and remove the upper half of the bearings.
Repeat step 1 and 2 for the remaining connecting rod bearings. Installation Procedure

Clean the bearing surfaces and clean the connecting rod surfaces. Install the upper half of the new bearings in the rods. Apply clean SAE 30 oil on the bearings and crankshaft journals. Place the connecting rods in position on the crankshaft.
Clean the bearing surfaces and clean the connecting rod surfaces. Install the lower half of the new bearings in the caps. Apply clean SAE 30 oil on the bearings, bolt threads, and contact surfaces of the nuts.

Use Tooling (A) in order to check the bearing clearance.
Illustration 3 g00990449Note: When you install the connecting rod caps ensure that the number on the side of the cap matches the number on the side of the connecting rod.

Place caps (1) in position on the connecting rods and install the nuts. Tighten the nuts to a torque of 40 4 N m (30 3 lb ft). Place a mark on each nut and the end of each bolt. Tighten the nuts an additional 90°.
Remove the cap. Measure the thickness of Tooling (A). The rod bearing clearance must be 0.1220 0.045 mm (0.0048 0.0018 inch) with new bearings. The maximum permissible clearance is 0.254 mm (0.0100 inch) with used bearings.
Install the caps in position on the connecting rods and install the nuts. Tighten the nuts to a torque of 40 4 N m (30 3 lb ft). Place a mark on each nut and the end of each bolt. Tighten the nuts an additional 90°.
Repeat steps 1 through 6 for the additional connecting rod bearings. End By:
Install the oil pan plate. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Oil Pan Plate - Remove and Install" for the engine that is being serviced.
Install the engine oil pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Pump - Install" for the engine that is being serviced.
