Improper maintenance procedures can cause bodily injury or death.Before performing any maintenance to the grapple, open the grapple completely, lower it into its service position, and shut the machine down.Ensure that all hydraulic pressure has been relieved before working on any hydraulic system.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Remove hose assemblies (2) and (3) from cylinder (1) .
Attach a hoist and a suitable lifting sling to the cylinder.

Remove bolts (7) and nuts (4) .
Remove washers (5) .
Use care when you tap on the pins. The bushings have a nylon lining. Damage can occur to the bushings and the taper on the pin joint.
Tap out pins (6) with Tooling (A) .
Remove bushings (8) from grapple cylinder (1) with Tooling (A) .
Repeat Steps 1 through 6 for the other grapple cylinder.Installation Procedure

Clean the holes and remove any metal burrs.
Grease bushings (8) and pins (6) .
Insert bushings (8) with Tooling (A). If you install new bushings, go to Step 4. If you use the existing bushings, go to Step 8.Note: Inspect the edges of the bushings for damage.
Remove the grease fittings from the piston rod and the cylinder tube.
Drill a hole through the bushings that is 4 mm (.16 inch) in diameter.
Install the grease fittings in the piston rod and the cylinder tube.
Attach a hoist and a suitable lifting sling to the cylinder. Install the cylinder in the grapple arm. The weight of the cylinder is 25 kg (55 lb).
Install pins (6) with Tooling (A) .
Lubricate bolts (7), washers (5), and nuts (4) .
Install one washer (5) on bolt (7). Install the bolt with the washer into the pin joint.
Install the other washer (5) and nut (4) on bolt (7) .
Tighten nuts (4) to a torque of 330 N m (250 lb ft).Note: The torque on the nut must be correct in order to ensure no play in the pin joint.

Install hose assemblies (2) and (3) on cylinder (1) .
Repeat Step 1 through 13 for the other grapple cylinder.
