Information:

Pressurized system: Hot coolant can cause serious burn. To open cap, stop engine, wait until radiator is cool. Then loosen cap slowly to relieve the pressure.
Make sure you read and understand the information in the topics Safety and Cooling System Specifications for all information pertaining to water, antifreeze and supplemental coolant additive requirements before you proceed with maintenance of the cooling system.
Note: This procedure pertains to Caterpillar Diesel Engine Antifreeze/Coolant (DEAC) only. This procedure does not pertain to machines that are shipped from the factory with Extended Life Coolant (ELC). This procedure does not pertain to machines that are maintained with Extended Life Coolant (ELC).Drain the coolant whenever the coolant is dirty or foaming.

Open the engine hood. The coolant recovery tank is mounted on the top of the engine directly in front of the cab.
Slowly loosen cooling system pressure cap (1) in order to relieve system pressure.
Lower the bottom guard. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Bottom Guard Lowering".

The coolant should be drained from the lowest point in the cooling system. Drain the coolant into a suitable container. Open the drain cock (2) that is located on the lower left side of the radiator tank. Allow the coolant to drain into the container.
Close drain cock (2) .
Replace the water temperature regulator.Reference: For the 554 Forwarder, refer to Disassembly and Assembly, SENR6241, "3054 Engine for Caterpillar Built Machines" for the replacement procedure.Reference: For the 574 Forwarder, refer to Disassembly and Assembly, SENR3611, "Basic Engine Components 3114, 3116 & 3126 Engines" for the replacement procedure.
Fill the system with a solution which consists of clean water and of cooling system cleaner. The concentration of the cooling system cleaner in the solution should be between 6 percent and 10 percent.
Start the engine. Run the engine for 90 minutes.
Stop the engine. To drain the cleaning solution from the tank, open the drain cock (2) that is located on the lower left side of the radiator tank. Allow the cleaning solution to drain into a suitable container.
While the engine is stopped, flush the system with water. Flush the system until the draining water is transparent.
Close drain cock (2) .
Add the coolant solution.Reference: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Capacities (Refill)" for the capacity of the cooling system.Note: If you are using Caterpillar antifreeze, do not add the liquid supplemental coolant additive at this time.
Start the engine. Run the engine without the cooling system pressure cap until the water temperature regulator opens and the coolant level stabilizes.Use a 8T-5296 Coolant Test Kit to check the concentration of the coolant.
Check the level of the coolant. Fill the expansion tank to the proper level, if necessary. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Capacities (Refill)" for the correct amount of coolant for your machine.
Clean the pressure cap and install the pressure cap.
Stop the engine. Close the engine hood.
