Removal Procedure
Personal injury can result from driveline torque windup under load.Unequal wheel speed can result in driveline torque windup which can cause driveline components to be under load during disassembly.Relieve the driveline torque windup before disassembly.
Release the driveline torque windup by raising either side of the machine until the wheels are off the ground. Lower the wheels back to the ground.
Chock the wheels in order to stabilize the machine for maintenance.

Remove four bolts (1) in order to disconnect drive shaft (2) from the through hitch drive shaft. Use a pry bar in order to separate drive shaft (2) from the through hitch drive shaft. Position drive shaft (2) on the machine frame.

Remove four bolts (3) in order to disconnect drive shaft (2) from the center differential.
Use two persons in order to remove drive shaft (2) from the machine. The weight of center drive shaft (2) is 47 kg (104 lb).

Remove lip type seal (4) from drive shaft (2). Note the orientation of the lip type seal for installation purposes.Installation Procedure
Inspect all parts and clean all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar parts for replacement.

Install lip type seal (4) to drive shaft (2). The sealing lips must face in the direction that is shown in the example.
If the drive shaft has been disassembled the drive shaft must be cleaned. Apply multipurpose grease to the splines of the drive shaft before assembly.Note: The drive shaft must be assembled with the spider assemblies in alignment. The spider assembly is shown in illustration 4.
Use two persons in order to position drive shaft (2) to the machine. The weight of center drive shaft (2) is 47 kg (104 lb).Note: Use caution during the installation of the bolts that secure the drive shaft in the machine. The threads of the bolts are very easily stripped if the bolts are not installed correctly.

Install four bolts (3) in order to connect drive shaft (2) to the center differential. Tighten bolts (3) to a torque of 135 20 N m (100 15 lb ft).

Install four bolts (1) in order to connect drive shaft (2) to the through hitch drive shaft. Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of 135 20 N m (100 15 lb ft).
