Position the wheel and bearings on the axle housing.
Install the hub and ring gear.
Install retainer (1) without shims (4). Use four bolts (Illustration 1).
While you turn the wheel, tighten the bolts in a circular pattern to 35 N m (26 lb ft). Tighten each bolt once.
While you turn the wheel, tighten the bolts in a circular pattern to 70 N m (52 lb ft).
Measure the threaded holes in retainer (1) by using a depth micrometer (2). Then find the average depth.
Use an outside micrometer (3) to measure the thickness of the retainer at the holes with threads and find the average thickness.
Find the difference between the two average measurements. This difference is the gap between the end of the axle housing and the retainer.
Remove retainer (1). Install shims (4) in order to achieve an average gap. The average gap is the measurement that is found in Step 8 plus 0.127 mm (.0050 inch). Install shims (4) between the axle housing and the retainer.
Install retainer (1) with shims (4). While you turn the wheel, tighten the bolts that hold retainer (1) to the axle housing to a torque of 270 25 N m (199 18 lb ft).
