Hydraulic schematic for axle oil cooler system
The axle oil cooler system consists of the following components: front axle housing (1), oil cooler (2), axle oil filter (3), screen (4), axle oil cooler pump (5), axle oil cooler pump (6), screen (7), axle oil filter (8), oil cooler (9) and rear axle housing (10).When the engine is running the axle oil cooler pumps circulate the axle oil through separate systems for each axle housing. The process for the front axle oil cooler system and the rear axle oil cooler system is identical.The axle oil cooler pump draws oil from the axle housing. The oil flows from the axle housing to the screen. The oil from the screen flows to the axle oil cooler pump. From the axle oil cooler pump the oil flows to the axle oil filter. The oil then flows from the axle oil filter through the axle oil cooler. From the axle oil cooler the oil flows back to the axle housing. The oil flows through passages in the axle housing to the final drive and brake assemblies and to the differential and bevel gear.
Illustration 2 g01043173The axle oil cooler pumps (5) and (6) are located on the left side of the engine.Axle oil cooler pump (5) circulates the oil in the front axle housing through the axle oil cooler. Axle oil cooler pump (6) circulates the oil in the rear axle housing through the axle oil cooler.Two bypass relief valves (11) are located in the axle oil cooler pumps. The bypass relief valve limits the amount of pressure in the axle oil cooling system. The bypass relief valve is rated at 1050 kPa (150 psi).Two temperature switches (12) are located in the axle oil cooler pumps. If the axle oil temperature becomes high, the contacts of the temperature switch close. When the contacts close a warning lamp in the operator's station is activated.

Screen (4) for the front axle oil cooler system is located above the center drive shaft on the rear frame.
Illustration 4 g01043494Screen (7) for the rear axle oil cooler system is located on the left engine mount.Screens (4) and (7) trap large particles of debris that may enter the system. Oil is drawn through the screens by the axle oil cooler pumps.
Illustration 5 g01043501Axle oil filters (3) and (8) are mounted on the right side of the engine compartment. Axle oil filter (3) is for the front axle oil cooler system. Axle oil filter (8) is for the rear axle oil cooler system.If the filter element becomes full of debris, the restriction to the flow of oil causes a pressure increase between the filter and the pump. This pressure increase causes the bypass relief valve in the pump to open. The oil then recirculates within the pump.
