Components of the Front Drive and Steering Axle (1) Final Drive (2) Flange (3) Knuckle assembly (4) Kingpins (5) Tie rods (6) Steering Cylinder assembly (7) Differential assembly (8) Axle HousingThe Front Drive and Steering axle consists of the following components: two final drives (1), two flanges (2), two knuckle assembly (3), four kingpins (4), two tie rods (5), one axle housing (8), one differential assembly (7) and one steering cylinder assembly (6) .Steering
Illustration 2 g01520302
The hydraulic steering cylinder assembly (6) is connected to the knuckle assemblies (3) through two adjustable tie rods (5). The knuckle assemblies (3) rotate on the axle with opposing tapered roller bearings in the kingpins (4) .Differential
Power from the transmission output shaft is transferred to the front axle by the drive shaft and universal joints. The power enters the front axle through the input flange. The input flange is attached to the pinion gear. Power is transferred from the pinion gear to the differential ring gear. The differential ring gear is bolted to the differential .Power is transferred through the differential by the pinion gears to the side gears. The side gears are splined to the axle shafts. Refer to Systems Operation, "Differential" for more information about the differential.Final Drives

Typical Final drive and axleComponents of the Final Drive and Axle (1) Planetary gears (2) Ring gear (3) Flange (4) Housing (5) Pins (6) Axle shaft (7) Universal joint (8) Sun gear and shaft (9) CarrierThe power is transferred through the axle shaft (6) and the universal joint (7) to the final drive. The final drive causes the last speed reduction and the last torque increase in the drive train. The final drive consists of the following components: the sun gear (8), the carrier (9), the planetary gears (1), and the ring gear (2). The sun gear (8) is joined to the axle shaft (6) by the universal joint (7). The ring gear (2) is splined to the housing (4). Four planetary gears (1) are mounted in the carrier (9). The carrier (9) is bolted to the flange (3). The flange (3) rotates on the housing (4) with two opposing tapered roller bearings. The power is transferred through the sun gear (8) to the planetary gears (1). The planetary gears (1) revolve around the inside of the ring gear (2). The movement of the planetary gears (1) around the ring gear (2) causes the carrier (9) and flange (3) to rotate. Power is transferred from the flange (3) to the wheel.
