Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Machine Preparation
Note: The steering frame lock must be installed to complete the line relief valves test.Note: Start the engine. Run the engine at high idle. Increase the temperature of the hydraulic oil to normal operating temperature.

Release the pressure from the steering system.Reference: Refer to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, "System Pressure - Release".

(5) Pressure tap for the steering system
Connect an 8T-0859 Pressure Gauge to pressure tap (5) .Note: The steering relief valve has a lower setting than the steering cylinder head end line relief valve and the rod end line relief valve. To correctly set the line relief valve, the steering relief valve setting must be temporarily increased.Reference: For additional information on setting the steering relief valve, refer to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, "Steering System Pressure - Test and Adjust" for the machine that is being serviced.
Start the engine. Raise the lift arms so that the bucket is clear of the ground.
Increase the engine to high idle rpm.
