Connect the steering frame lock. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Frame Lock - Separate and Connect". Note: The removal procedure for the front axle shafts and the rear axle shafts are identical.Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before you begin the removal procedure, the exterior of the components should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism. Precision components can be damaged by contaminants or by dirt.

Rotate the tire and rim until drain plug (3) is in the correct position, as shown.
Remove drain plug (3). Drain the oil from the final drive into a suitable container for storage or for disposal. For the capacity of the differential and final drives refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Capacities (Refill)".
Remove two bolts (1) from cover (2). Install Tooling (A) (not shown) in place of the two bolts. Note: Tooling (A) must be modified in order to be used as a guide bolt. Position Tooling (A) in a suitable vice. Remove the head of the bolt in order to use Tooling (A) as a guide bolt.
Remove the six remaining bolts (1) that hold cover (2) in position.

Use three 3/8 inch bolts as forcing screws in order to separate cover (2) from the final drive planetary carrier. Remove cover (2).

Remove O-ring seal (4) from the final drive planetary carrier.

Typical example
Install Tooling (B) in the end of axle shaft (5). Pull axle shaft (5) partially out of the final drive. Note: It may be necessary to slightly rotate the tire and rim, forward or backward in order to disengage the axle shaft.
Attach a suitable lifting device to axle shaft (5). The weight of the axle shaft is approximately 48 kg (105 lb). Remove axle shaft (5) from the final drive.

Use Tooling (C) to remove retaining ring (8) from the axle shaft.
Remove gear (6) and spacer (7) from the axle shaft.
