This diagnostic code is associated with the right steering cylinder position sensor. The position sensor provides a PWM input signal to the Implement ECM and to the Transmission Chassis ECM. The FMI 13 diagnostic code is activated when the ECM detects that the sensor needs calibration.The sensor is a PWM sensor that operates at a frequency of approximately 500 Hz. The duty cycle of the PWM signal that is supplied to the ECM is measured in very small increments. The changes in the duty cycle of the sensor can not be measured with a digital multimeter.Test Step 1. CALIBRATION
Perform the calibration procedure for the sensor. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Calibration" section of this manual for the correct calibration procedure. Expected Result:The calibration procedure was performed successfully.Results:
YES. - The calibration procedure was performed successfully. Resume normal machine operation.STOP
NO. - The calibration was not successful.Repair: Repeat the calibration procedure for the sensor. If the second calibration procedure is not successful, replace the steer cylinder position sensor.For removal of the position sensor from the steering cylinder, refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR 9704, "Clevis Style Cylinder Sensor - Remove and Install". After sensor replacement, the new position sensor parameters MUST be entered in Cat ET before the machine can be operated. Refer to the Testing and Adjusting, "Position Sensor (Steering Cylinder) - Set" section of this manual for the correct procedure.After cylinder replacement, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Calibration" section of this manual for the correct calibration procedure. If the problem is still present after replacement and calibration of the new sensor, the ECM may have failed.Prior to replacing an ECM, always contact your dealership's Technical Communicator for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. If the cause of the diagnostic code is not found, replace the ECM. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".STOP
